Educational Public Programs for March 2019

Dallying in Doylestown - New Program
Join Naturalists on this trip to historic Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the county seat of Bucks County. This area has a rich and interesting history from the colonial period to the early 20th century. We will visit the Fonthill Castle, Mercer Museum, and the Moravian Tile and Pottery Works for a combination of formal and self-guided tours. Bring money for lunch in town during a break in the middle of the day.

The Young Explorers Club
(Ages infant-5 with parent)
It is never too early to get little ones outdoors to experience the wonders of nature. This series will focus on developing their five senses through simple activities. Parents will share the excitement with their children during this special hour and return home with ideas to explore nature close to home.

(Ages 5-7)
KinderNats is a program designed and geared for children who love being outdoors. This afterschool series will get them outside to study science and explore the natural world. These Junior Naturalists will be engaged through hiking, games, and activities. Each week will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather.
$24 for 4-day session per person

Forest Fitness
Join a weekly walking group and enhance your exercise regimen with Mother Nature! Improve your health, clear your mind, and enjoy nature as you traverse the level trails of Lord Stirling Park with a Naturalist as your guide. Leave cool, calm, and collected. Participants must be able to walk continuously at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. Bring a water bottle and a desire to leave your troubles behind. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$20 for 4-day session per person

Tree House Gang
(Ages 3-5)
Bring your little ones to the Environmental Education Center for fun science and nature programming. These two-and-a-half hour afternoon classes will enhance learning by spending up to two hours outside exploring, hands-on activities, meeting live animals, and learning by experimenting. Each month has a different theme. Please send a small snack with your child. Please dress for the weather.

Swamp Kids
(Ages 8-10)
Become a Swamp Kid! This program is designed to let the child's curiosity and passion guide their learning.  Nature is the greatest teacher!  Each week this outdoor afterschool series will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather and warm, waterproof boots are a must.

Baby Owls

It might still be cold outside, but owls are busy building their nests and getting ready to raise their young. Come learn all about owls with fun activities, crafts, and stories. The program should be a real hoot! Please wear footwear appropriate for hiking.

Raritan Bay Birding
Raritan Bay is an excellent place to spend the day birding! We will visit some of the following places: Natco Lake, Union Beach, Conaskonk Point, Raritan Bay Waterfront Park, Perth Amboy waterfront, and possibly look for the Carteret colony of parakeets! Bring binoculars, lunch, and bundle up!

River Rats

Come join us for this exciting weekend learning adventure. During each monthly session, we will hike, observe the natural world, interact with live animals, and explore the Great Swamp. Let's make sure that St. Patrick is not the only one wearing green on this special day! We will learn a little bit about the Emerald Isle and the traditions of Ireland. Little Green Thumbs
(Ages infant-5 with parent)
Spring is upon us and it is time to start growing our garden plants. Bring seeds to life and begin growing beautiful plants even while it is still cold outside. Come join us as we plant basil, rosemary, thyme, and parsley so that you can spice up any meal! In two weeks, you will have young seedling plants for your indoor or outdoor garden.

Winter Walkin' in the Pines
Join us on a winter's day for some easy walking down in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Our travels may include Whitesbog Village, the Evert Nature Trail, the Franklin Parker Preserve, and/or Lebanon State Forest. We will hike five to six miles total, at an easy pace, while doing some winter birding. Bring a bag lunch, binoculars, and, of course, dress for the weather.

The building is open 9am-5pm daily.
Exhibits are open 9am-4:30pm daily.
Registration is accepted 9am-4:30pm daily.
The building is closed on Holidays.
Trails are open dawn to dusk daily but closed on Deer Management days as scheduled.
